New build house completed in Esher.

The concept of this house from inception was in drawing natural light from the brighter and warmer southern front elevation through to the more shaded spaces to the rear, where the resultant has been two very different elevational design treatments. The open high vaulted front entrance hallway with its curtain wall frameless glazing by IQ Glass & sculptural high finished stairs by Cake Industries reinforces this play on light that runs throughout the spatial design.

The rear elevation with its large glass zinc clad dormers & ground floor minimal framed sliding doors set within diagonally laid Kebony wood cladding connects and grounds this this new house with its environment. Light and how this is directed throughout the house is what has driven this design both in plan and elevation.

Elmbridge Council has granted consent for the remodeling and extension to an existing single dwelling house in Cobham, Surrey.

AUA’s design proposal seeks to provide a modern living environment by creating a contemporary ground floor extension which extends into the rear garden to provide open plan entertaining space to this family home.

The scheme also includes full re-modelling of the interior, loft conversion and restoration to the front elevation of the property.

The design of this 70 bed hotel site within a site that forms part of a wider allocation for new development in the North Cornwall Local Plan. The overall scale and appearance of the building has been generated through an iterative process of analysis, development and consultation to promote a considered development. The design relates to the existing urban fringe of the local town and enhances biodiversity combined with the existing vegetation.

AUA has gained consent to redevelop a plot of land to the rear of Barnes High Street in order to regenerate an under utilised brownfield site. Consent was granted through appeal where the Planning Inspectorate noted that the design would be of a high quality modern appearance which would contrast but not compete with the important buildings in the Conservation Area.

The development proposes the demolition of an existing single storey stock room building and the construction of a high-specification residential dwelling with sustainable design and construction principles incorporated into the proposed scheme. The site is a typical urban back land site surrounded by buildings of different designs and uses in close proximity to one another. Several buildings in the vicinity of the site on Barnes High Street are Buildings of Townscape Merit (BTM) where the development plan seeks to preserve and enhance the historic and architectural value, including their setting.

The proposed mews house is of a modest scale and would follow the pattern of development of the area to the rear of Barnes High Street. The height of the proposal reflects that of the surrounding area, including the adjacent commercial buildings either side, and the massing and setbacks of the scheme have been provided to maintain visual amenity and outlook to the windows of the surrounding buildings.

The new proposal also looks to improve the visual amenity to the surrounding houses overlooking the development by creating extensive green roofs to the development. This system improves the retention of rainwater, biodiversity, thermal insulation, visual outlook to the roof area from the surrounding buildings and requires only occasional maintenance. The Hidden Home by AU Architects unlocks the rear of a redundant commercial unit together with providing a basement extension to create an innovative home in a tight urban environment.

The front wall acts both as a device to provide a barrier to the street  as well as a backdrop to the internal light well which provides both light and privacy to the new dwelling. A floating walnut staircase links the two floors together and the internal design maximises light, space and storage.

AUA has collaborated with CTS bridges, Clarkebond and Dawnus Construction to design and build a pedestrian footbridge over the River Biss. The bridge spans 26m and links Cradle Bridge Retail Park to both St Stephens Place and Trowbridge Town Centre.

The bridge forms an important addition to the strategic masterplan of the Town Centre and the design satisfies both the Environmental Agency’s requirements on flood defense and the Ecology Constraints to the site. The bridge is finished internally with a hardwood non-slip timber floor, stainless steel handrails and includes low-level lighting that will illuminate the decking but will avoid spill onto the river below.

These two smaller commercial units within Cradle Bridge Retail Park have been designed to be simple pavilion buildings with clear spans to provide flexible spaces for prospective tenants. The elevations are again simple with clear zones for signage and a simple palette of materials.

The roof overhang and scale of glazing defines the entrances to these buildings with metal cladding used to define the signage zone and roof canopy. The siting of these 2 buildings allows for a clear vista to the M&S foodhall whilst also opening this side of the site to the town centre.

The scheme has been designed to achieve BREEAM Very Good for the shell construction.

The unit design adopts a simple pavilion style building with a sloping roof to accommodate offices / staff areas at 1st floor level to the front of the building. The proposed materials look to simplify the standard tenants’ design by introducing a mixture of red brick and render with a metal roof to mimic the other profile roofs within Cradle Bridge Retail Park.

This approach allows unit 1, 2 & 4 to relate to each other creating ‘bookends’ to the site either side of the Anchor tenant. The building proportion mimics the concept to M&S with a mixture of horizontal timber louvres / vertical cladding to help reduce the building’s massing.

The scheme has been designed to achieve BREEAM Very Good for the shell construction.
